Who lives in a house like this? It could be you… In the time since it was built by a father and son in the 1800s, it’s been home to an MP, a doctor, bakers and bikers, a teacher and a policeman.

From its elevated position a mile from Bedford’s centre, each resident has watched the town below them evolve. What remains unchanged is why people are drawn to the Prime Ministers area. Renowned Harpur Trust schooling is a stone’s throw away, Bedford Park is on the doorstep, and The Embankment is still as popular today for a meander along the river as it was for the Victorians.

This particular property appealed to the current owners due to its commuter-friendly location. Mr can walk to the station in 20 minutes, less than half that by bike, and trains take you into London in as little as 41 minutes. Secondly, their son was growing up, fast, and needed more space, which this home has in abundance. Mrs describes the house as a Tardis, and once inside, you realise just how far the accommodation unfolds.

When they moved in as a family of five in 2007, they couldn’t have foreseen that this would be a nine-strong household during lockdowns. But everyone had plenty of room to reside comfortably, and when they all get together now, at 11 members and counting, it’s a true multi-generational home, everyone gathered in the kitchen/diner, gravitating out into the garden, dispersing to the lounge and snug as the evening closes in.

As is usual of a property of this period, it didn’t look like this when they viewed. Mrs had vision, and new owners will benefit from her planning, precision, and picking off old paint with a pin! She sought advice from experts to ensure the era was reflected, and she brought many features back to life. All new guttering and radiators have been installed in the last couple of years, the roof was recently overhauled, and all windows are double glazed, some sealed for retaining heat.

The kitchen/diner, transformed before current ownership from a scullery and coal bunkers, is the hub of the home, with its past hard to imagine in this modern space. Shaker-style cabinetry is topped with granite surfaces, with a sizeable central island with a Franke sink. There’s an integrated dishwasher, plus provision for further appliances such as a range oven. The wood flooring has underfloor heating, and there’s a plinth hoover to make housework that bit easier. We love the window seat in the dining area, perfect for your morning cup of tea.

The lounge and snug offer peaceful separation to balance the social space in the kitchen/diner. The lounge to the front is light and airy with a wide bay window, while the snug in the centre is warm and cosy, and flexible for various uses. Both have beautiful fireplaces, with two more upstairs.

The first floor comprises four bedrooms, three of which are substantial doubles, the fourth a good-sized single. The master and its en suite are to one end, while the second bedroom to the back has the best views over the rooftops and treetops, across the skyline and over to the countryside beyond. The family shower room has a double walk-in shower, and there’s also a wet room area in the utility downstairs to avoid queuing to get ready in the morning. The loft presents potential to convert (stp) into more accommodation if needed.

Functioning as another room is the outside space. The bi-fold doors are nearly always open to unite it with indoors, and the children and grandchildren head through to the patio as soon as they arrive. The walled, tiered garden is enclosed and well screened, and south-facing for optimum sunshine. An irrigation system keeps plants watered, and bins can be taken out via a gated passageway to the rear. Mr had a brick-built barbeque area created, Mrs grows herbs and vegetables here, and the workshop/garage has been mostly commandeered by their son. This is insulated, has a fire door and a water supply, and would convert well into a garden office if not required for storing things for whatever your family’s hobbies may be.

There’s Hill Rise nature reserve opposite, Towers Health & Racquets Club a mile away,Robinson pool and gym even closer, Priory Sailing Club nearby, cafés and restaurants galore, numerous pubs within stumbling distance, and live music and a roster of events at Bedford Park and Bedford’s venues. However you like to spend your time, inside and out, this property and this position will provide.
